Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Since the sternocleidmastoid muscle was discovered to possess an activity synchronized with the masticatory muscles, the co-operating of cranial and mandibular movements gradually attracts much attention in dentistry. Conventional analysis of this co-operation, however, was still restricted to a qualitative level. In order to expand this to a quantitative analysis, we proposed a canonical correlation analysis of the 3D movement of the mandibular incisor and the fluctuation or the cranial orientation. The canonical correlation coefficient is computed for these two vectors lasted for duration T centered at every time t. Duration T is determined so as to maximize the variation of the time series of this coefficient. Through experiments employing data of a habitual open/close movement, the canonical correlation coefficient usually increased during the open/close phases, and decreased during the occlusal phase. Thus our methodology can be considered to be effective for detecting the co-operation of cranial and mandibular movements.
