Estimation of Sagittal Movements of the Temporomandibular Joint from Digitized Sequential Image of X-ray Television

Abstract(in English) This paper describes an estimation of sagittal movement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) employing X-ray television data. This estimation consists of two distinct procedures : 1)computation of the velocity field (optical flow) employing a gradient method ; 2)least-squares estimation of the velocity and the angular velocity (movement parameters) from the optical flow obtained. Since the condylar image observed as its contour is somewhat blurred and partially occluded, the computed optical flow is usually erroneous, which deteriorates the accuracy of the movement parameters to an unacceptable level. To improve this, we recurrently estimated the parameters through an iterative procedure as follows : 1) to estimate the optical flow from the parameters obtained ; 2) to estimate the parameters again by loading every flow vector with weight proportional to the directional difference relative to corresponding flow vector obtained in the previous step, 3) to repeat steps 1) and 2) until the parameters converge. This iterative improvement of the movement parameters was verified to be effective, through experiments employing an actual X-ray-TV image sequence of the TMJ.
