Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We developed a color image processing system based on personal computer to acquire the coordinates of swimming path of goldfish. We investigated the effects of monocular deprivation or unilateral transection of optic nerve on the turning behavior. Monocular deprivation and hemisection of optic nerve induced a preferential unidirectional turn towards the remained intact eye side. At 4 weeks after hemisection of optic nerve, goldfish moved bidirectionally as the control. Additional experiments with isotope ^<14>C-proline which was transferred from eye ball into the optic tectum in the goldfish after unilateral transection of optic nerve also well correlated with the recovery time from the preferential turning behavior. The present study indicates that our turning histogram of swimming behavior is a very useful marker for quantifying the regeneration process after transection of goldfish optic nerve.
