Medical Image Compression using Orthogonal Wavelet Transform based Characteristics of Perception Threshold to Quantization Noise

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we proposed wavelet-based medical image compression method using the characteristics of perception threshold to quantization noise. In designing quantizer of image compression algorithm used wavelet transform(WT), the method is usually adopted that minimizes entropy under constraint condition reconstruction error is constant. The past method using modulation transfer function(MTF) of human visual system has allocated quantization noise according to the weight based on MTF. But MTF is frequency characteristics founded on the perception threshold to sine waves patterns, so strictly speaking, its nature is different from one based on the perception threshold to quantization noise given to every subband image. So in applying to medical image that can little allow visual distortion, it is hard to get high compression ability. From these points of view, this paper investigates the characteristics of perception threshold to quantization noise given for every frequency subband image decomposed by WT, and of nonlinearity of this noise between subband image, then by using this error lead from these nature, allocates optimally quantization error to each subband, and gets better compression ability.
