Abstract(in English) Motion estimation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) from X-ray television data consists of two different procedures as follows: 1)computation of the velocity field (optical flow) from two successive images; and 2) estimation of the velocity and the angular velocity from the flow data obtained. TMJ movement in a given X-ray image squence can be observed merely as movement of a blurred contour of the mandibular head, overlapped by images of cranial bones. Such image sequence cannot be dealt with accurately by conventional optical-flow estimation methods. To improve this estimation, we modified an advanced method using Gabor wavelet transfomation into one applicable to X-ray images of the TMJ, by incorporating the optimization of the scale parameter of the transformation at all image points. Through experiments employing an actual X-ray-TV image sequence of the TMJ, our methodology was verified to be effective to improve the estimation accuracy of the optical flow, consquently the improvement of the motion estimation being achieved.
