Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Relative movement between the femur and tibia themselves has yet to be measured clinically, primarily due to the limitation of measurement methodology. To achieve such measurement, we developed a totally new method capable of measuring 6-DOF movement of the tibia relative to the femur, using an open MR system. Knee movement was sampled at several flexion angles including extension, by obtaining sagittal MR images of the entire knee joint. At each flexion angle, relative position and orientation of the femur and tibia was computed in a manner as follows: 1)reconstruction of 3-D joint contour from all MR-images; 2)registration of the bone contours to corresponding ones obtained in extension; 3) computation of the motion parameters. In order to reduce MR-imaging time, we experimentally obtained the relationship between the number of sagittal sections of the knee and the deviation of motion-parameter values. Additionally, we actually measured knee movement of a subject during flexion in an attempt to certify the validity and clinical applicability of our methodology.
