Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes a system capable of intraoperatively monitoring knee movement of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on a real-time basis. Pre- and post-operative measurements of knee movement have been reported numerously. Its intraoperative measurement, however, has yet to be attempted, despite a number of clinical benefits. To achieve this, we developed a linear CCD camera-based photostereometric system, KKN/1B, capable of measuring knee movement in 6 degrees of freedom. By combining kinematic data obtained from this system with a computer model of the articular surfaces of the prosthesis, the relative movement of the opposing surfaces was computed and visualized by using a wire-frame representation and a distance map on the tibial surface. This particular visualization was updated into a real time-based one by incorporating a fast algorithm for time-consuming distance-map computation. Through experiments employing a single cadaveric knee, our real-time visualization of the relative movement and the distance map was verified to function at a rate of 35 flames per second and 10 flames per second, respectively.
