Abstract(in English) A fast motion estimation(ME)algorithm called a"two-step modified-breaking-off-search(2-step MBOS)"was developed for MPEG4. It improved processing speed of the full-search method by a factor of 4 while maintaining visual quality of the full-search method(QCIF"Carphone", 64 kbps, 15 frames/sec, search area=46 pixels×46 lines). At 220 MHz, 0.8 V, the power dissipation of an ME circuit using the two-step MBOS algorithm and 0.13μm CMOS technology was 114μW which was only 8.4% that of the conventional tree architecture ME array LSI.
