Abstract(in English) With the advent of rewritable media, interest about MPEG-2 recording systems has risen. We report on the development of an encoder LSI which integrates both video and audio MPEG-2 encoding on a single chip. By using this LSI, the price of MPEG-2 recording systems can be reduced. This LSI realizes low power consumption, flexibility and high picture quality through the development of a mixed hardware/software architecture. A codec module prototype was developed using this LSI and future application systems can easily be built using this as a reference design. As an example we built a hard disk recording system and confirmed that record and play can run simultaneously.
