Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Cellular automaton (CA) is a promising computer paradigm that can break through the von Neumann bottleneck. Two-dimensional CA is especially suitable for application to pixel-level image processing. This paper describes a fully parallel 1-Mbit CAM^2 LSI, content addressable memory for cellular automata machine. It has advanced functions for processing various types of cellular automaton or pixel-parallel image processing, such as mathematical morphology and Discrete-time Cellular Neural Networks. Moreover, since it has 16k words, which can process 128x128 pixels in parallel, a board-sized pixel-parallel image processing system can be implemented using several chips. This CAM^2 LSI is a promising device for expanding CA usage and will make a significant contribution to the development of compact, high-performance and flexible image processing systems.
