A Low Power Video A/D Converter Using the Correlation of Moving Pictures

Abstract(in English) This paper presetns a low power video A/D converter suitable for intergrating it on CMOS image sensors. The A/D converter uses the correlation of moving picture to estimate the analog input. Based on a correlation of moving pictures, the predictor generates reference voltages to a comparator array. The reference voltages are generated so that the iterative A/D conversion converges in the logarithmic order to the estimation error. Simulations using standard moving pictures showed that the average number of iterations is less than 3 for all the moving pictures tested. The A/D converter has much less number of comparators than that of the two-step flash A/D converter which is commonly used for video applications. The proposed A/D converter is particularly useful for on chip integration to CMOS image sensors.
