Design for Motion Vector Estimation Array LSI Using Snapping-off Motion Vector Estimation Algorithm

Abstract(in English) A new motion vector estimation (MVE) algorithm (i.e., a full MVE algorithm incorporating a "snapping-off" technique) is developed. It can reduce the amount of computation to about 40% that of conventional full MVEs with only a small, degradation in picture quality. Both the conventional full MVE algorithm and the "snapping-off" technique have been applied to nine-stage pipeline 0.5μm CMOS MVE arrays for MPEG2-MP@NlL. Calculated power dissipation was about 400mW at supply voltage of 2.5V operating at 40 5.MHz. It is approximately 1/23 that of the MVE array using conventional full MVEs. By using "snapping-off" technique a two-stage pipeline MVE array for MPEG2-MP@ML can also be built. Calculated power dissipation was further reduced to about 305mW at supply voltage of 2.5V operating at 40.5MHz. Furthermore latency and hardware size of the pipeline registers are also reduced to about 1/5 and 1/13, respectively.
