Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Intel Corp., which developed the first microprocessor, 4004, in the world about 25 years ago, is the world's largest maker of semiconductors. But the U.S. company is now on the verge of falling into a crisis. Before the 21 century is ushered in, Intel has to solve a lot of technical problems, such as excessive generation of heat and large power consumption. This article describes, from the viewpoint of a journalist, the current state of Intel and problems it has; its state-of-the-art technologies such as those used in its latest microprocessor, Pentium II; and the trend in the makers of x 86 compatible chips.
