Abstract(in English) For multimedia applications like MPEG-2 processing, a processor needs stringent performance. This paper shows a 2V 250MHz 1.2W VLIW multimedia processor and the key technologies for its implementation. The processor core integrates 300k transistors in an 8mm^2 area and is implemented with 64KB SRAM onto a 6.0x6.2mm^2 chip in a 0.3μm 1-poly 4-metal CMOS process. It exploits 2-way VLIW and 2-way SIMD parallelism and gets a sustained throughput of 1000MOPS when running at 250MHz. Implementation techniques such as clock skew control, high speed multiply operations, and some critical paths are discussed as a case study for designing high performance multimedia processors.
