Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper provides an evaluation and comparison of several Japanese question answering(QA)systems on the basis of experiments on extracting answers to fifty questions from one-year newspaper articles. Question answering systems have been attracting much interest since the start of the QA of TREC-8 in 1999. QA is differentiated from information retrieval and information extration in the following sense. QA systems return the exact part of an article that directly answers the question given by a user, while information retrieval systems only return a list of articles. QA systems are open-domain, while information extraction is highly domain-dependent and predefines the items to extract by using templates. This paper explores the baseline of Japanese QA systems and also presents our experiences in evaluating and comparing QA systems.
