Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Current machine translation methods are not able to deal with long sentences which include rhetorical expressions such as ellipses, inversions and idioms. These rhetorical expressions appear frequently in long sentences, and their processing are one of the main problems in machine translation. In this paper we examine ″as. ..as″ sentence structure, typical one of correlative, which often ap pears in varius documents, and propose a method which applies the information acquired from the structures to a E-J machine translation system. The experimental results show that this method is effective for flexible analysis of long sentence structures with rhetorical expressions.
