Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We describe the forms and categorial functions of Japanese discourse markers. Based on phonetic forms, vowel lengths, and intonation patterns, a systemactic taxonomy of Japanese discourse markers is proposed. This taxonomy shows that Japanese discourse markers are systematically generated from a relatively small number of basic forms by assigning various intonational patterns and vowel lengths. It also shows that intonation patterns often characterize the 'functions' of discourse markers. We also show that a 'syntax' of Japanese discourse markers can be devised that characterizes their behavior.
