Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The 40 Hz oscillation is observed in the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus. It is important for the information processing in the brain. The oscillation in the hippocampal slices, was so far induced by the activation of the acetylcholine receptor or by the high-frequency stimulation. Recently we observed the spontaneous 40 Hz oscillation in the CA3 region of the hippocampal slices without any drug or the stimulation. The oscillation called SHNO had the frequencies of 15-20Hz, 30-40Hz and 50-55HZ. It could be observed even in the isolated CA3 mini slices. Na+ channel blocker, tetrodotoxin or GABAa receptor antagonist bicuculline blocked SHNO. The different SHNOs could be observed at the different two positions in CA3. These results suggested that the inhibitory neurons in CA3 region can contribute to the generation of the distributed SHNO.
