Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Here, we propose the computational theory that the MST area, during smooth pursuit eye movement, estimates and predicts the external state as the probability distribution. Neuron population encode probability distribution and the signal is processed based on the Kalman-filter like algorithm. In the present study, we propose the MST-two dimension neural field model as the hardware level's study to understand computational theory and algorithm mentioned above. We assume that the neural field model includes various receptive fields and orientation tunings. Our model can reproduce that the MST activity is maintained even when the visual target suddenly disappears during smooth pursuit(pursuit blink), but rapidly decreases when the visual stimulus suddenly disappears during ocular following response(OFR blank). Our model can also reproduce that closed loop smooth pursuit and OFR, and the behavioral difference between pursuit blink and OFR blank under closed loop condition. The present results indicates that the MST activity independent of the visual input is generated based on the MST own dynamics. We conclude that the signal calculated in the MST area is the desired trajectory signal for the inverse dynamics model in downstream of the MST area.
