Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is known that a capacity of the short-term memory is limited to 7±2, which is called "the magical number". From the viewpoint of the reaction time, the new magical number4±1 has been also proposed, over which reaction time rapidly increases with the number of memorized items. It has been shown that some memory tasks do not have the new magical number. This study investigates the new magical number depends on whether the visual stimuli are learned or un-learned by a subject. A psychophysical experiment was made in which subjects conducted the task of face recognition of aquaintances and of strangers. The results are : (1) Magical number was larger with acquaintances image than with strangers one. This suggests that the long-term memory affects the short-term memory storage. (2)The curves of the reaction time became flat around the number of magical number. This suggests that subjects changed the scanning strategy from the serial exhaustive scanning in the neighborhood of new magical number4±1.
