Abstract(in English) | We have observed in our experiments on monkeys and humans, that eye velocity is modulated by a brief movement of a background during smooth pursuit. We have proposed a model to represent the behavioral results. In this model, the total system which generates eye movements is composed of two subsystems. One subsystem generates smooth pursuit eye movements (subsystem-P). The other generates the eye movements elicited by the background motion ( subsystem-B). Moreover, in this model, it is assumed that the gain in subsystem-B is modulated by using the output of subsystem-P. In the present study, we firstly improve subsystem-B to construct a better total system. Then, we propose two different mechanisms for the control of the gain in the subsystem-B and introduce each of them to the new total system. Both the improved models use an output of the subsystem-P to control the gain in subsystem-B. One model uses a signal of retinal image motion of the background in addition to the output of the subsystem-P. The other uses a signal of the relative motion between the background and pursuit target in addition to the output of subsystem-P. Both the proposed models have successfully reproduced the properties of the eye velocity modulations elicited by the background motion during smooth pursuit. |
