Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Spontaneous single-unit activity during sleep was recorded from neurons in the region of the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus. The results showed a white noise-like spectrum in the low frequency range, 0.04-1.0 Hz, during steady-state non-REM sleep(slow-wave sleep), and a 1/f-noise, during REM sleep. These results are consistent with our previous reports regarding the thalamic ventrobasal complex neurons, as well as the hippocampal theta and pyramidal neurons, the neurons of the mesencephalic reticular formation, the primary somatosensory cortex, and areas 6 and 18. Possible mechanisms underlying the transition in slow-dynamics between non-REM and REM sleep are discussed in view of an alteration in neuronal interactions due to changes in the effects of aminergic/cholinegic modulations of the brain during sleep.
