A Spreading Neural Network Recognizes Rotation and Shape of Gray Scaled Human Face

Abstract(in English) Paying attention to the parietal cortex, a spreading neural network was proposed that can simultanously recognize the orientation and shape of a character in a binary image. We expanded this neural network to be able to recognize a human face in a gray scaled image and compared the recognition performance with that of a binary image using same parameters, i. e., 4 learning orientations and 4 spreading orientations. As to orientation recognition, a range of recognition error was -1.2゜~1.4゜in a gray scaled image and it was 0.4゜~ -0.9゜in a binary image. This neural network could correctly recognize shape in both cases. Next, we searched for parameters of this neural net to minimize recognition error. Number of spreading direction and spreading range were severally changed in conditions of fixed number of learnig direction and fixed non-learned range. The recognition error was smallest when the number to spreading direction was greater than the number of learning direction and the spreading range equaled to the non-learned range.
