Abstract(in English) Although surfacing a carriageway with a drainage asphalt pavement has been increasingly applied to common roads as a practical countermeasure against traffic noises, some problems including the deterioration of sound absorptive effect due to blinding of a drainage asphalt pavement has been pointed out. Therefore, it was proposed to cover a sidewalk with sound absorption materials instead of asphalt. The favorable effect of such sound absorptive sidewalk which was examined by using a loudspeaker as a sound source was reported in the previous paper. In this paper, results of the experimental application of the sound absorptive sidewalk to actual roads are reported. The noise level reduction of 2 to 3 dB at 1.2 m high and 1 dB at 3.5 m high achieved by the sound absorptive sidewalk proved the proposed countermeasures to be effective against the traffic noise.
