Geographic Object Management Based on Characteristics of Co-Existence Rules

Abstract(in English) According to wide spread of GIS application fields, it is required to realize unified utilization of various kinds of GIS. For the purpose, this paper discusses a geograophic database system which manages each geographic entity as a geographic object. By taking user's purpose and situation into account, geographic objects required by the user and their corresponding objects by utilizing geographic domain thesauruses are selected. Furthermore, our system also retrieves co-existence objects which have no relations in the thesauruses but can improve readability of maps. Representation of each object is determined by its importance. Based on characteristics of co-existence rules, this paper classifies them into 3 types, i.e., a co-existence rule among different classes, that within the same class and a rule between two instances. An algorithm to select co-existence rules based on user's situation and a method to control multiple application of rules are proposed. This paper also represents a prototype system which utilizes scenery images as GUI.
