Logical Page Analysis Based on Emergent Computation : Digitization of Existing Documents Using Document Reading System

Abstract(in English) A new method of logical page analysis is proposed for a document reader to be used for reading a wide variety of documents. Emergent computation, which is a key concept of artificial life, is adopted to analyze various complex document structures. The proposed method uses a multi-layer architecture consisting of five subsystems: typographic analysis, logical element recognition, logical element extraction, layout element segmentation, and logical element modification. Emergent computation is used for the interaction between subsystems to produce effective and flexible behavior of the entire system. The global logical structure of a document is extracted from such interaction. Experimental results show the method is robust and effective for various document styles.
