Performance Evaluation of Class Hierarchy Locking on Object- Oriented Database Systems

Abstract(in English) There are two kinds of class hierarchy locking protocols,i.e., Explicit-Locking and Implicit-Locking,which are employed as the concurrency control algorithm in Object-Oriented Database Systems(OODBSs).Intuitively,Explicit-Locking is appropriate when accessing classes near the leaf level of a deep class hierarchy, and Implicit-Locking is appropriate when accessing classes near the root of class hierarchy.However,it has not been extensively investigated which one of these two locking protocols is appropriate in general,because of the reasons such that,the OODBS generally has a complex data structure and no general access pattern on it.In this paper,we construct a simulation model for OODBSs and make some performance evaluation studies on these two protocols and conventional Two Phase Locking protocol.
