Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, much attention is directed to broadband networks such as those based on the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology. In this paper, we discuss how the broadband networks have impact upon database technologies. First, we discuss promising database applications which will make good use of such broad bandwidth. Among them are multimedia databases, scientific databases, mobile databases, CALS, and data warehouses. Secondly, we discuss intensively the database migration technique based on broad bandwidth. This technique requires us to reconsider the conventional methods for load balancing and concurrency control, and realizes the database pipeline architecture. Finally, we discuss various possible ways of utilizing ATM services for the database management, and demonstrate their applications.
