Current Trends of Sematic and Knowledge Processing

Abstract(in English) Recent studies of natural language processing(NLP)have directed to construct and consider a large-scale system instead of so- called ″toy system.″ However,gaps between a large-scale and a toy system are too large to promote NLP studies.This is one reason why NLP studies stagnate.Recently,some trials to overcome this tendency occur.One is to introduce new paradigms into syntactic and, or semantic analysis of NLP.Integrated processing,semantic analysis using connectionist network,and other experiments are introduced.The other is to construct large-scale knowledge base and large-scale dictionaries for composing large-scale NLP system. The project promoted by Electronic Dictionary Research Institute(EDR)in Japan and other projects and/or studies mainly performed in Europe and USA are introduced.These projects are expected to give good effects not only to NLP,semantic processing, and knowledge processing,but also to studies of artificial intelligence in the near future.
