On an Application Development Environment with a Mechanism Supporting Host Mobility

Abstract(in English) As computer software becomes large and complex, a lot of computer resources are required to process it. Therefore, it is difficult to construct application software for handy terminals such as PDA(Personal Digital Assistant), because they have few computer resources. To resolve this problem, we propose a system called PENGUIN (Programming Environment for the Nomadic Generation Using Integrated Networking) for constructing a variety of applications for mobile hosts, partly distributing the computation load to a set of fixed hosts. For the distribution of computation load, PENGUIN provides two mechanisms, i.e., the resource selection mechanism and the migration support mechanism. In this paper, we describe the details of the migration support mechanism which enables a mobile host to move while part of the computation work of an application is processed by a remote computer. First, four types of processing which enables mobile host migration are defined. Then, our design of the migration support mechanism is described. The mechanism is divided into two components, i.e., the remote processing objects and the migration support objects. Using PENGUIN, we can easily construct a variety of applications which efficiently support the migration of mobile hosts.
