Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Along with the recent popularization of Intranet environments, database systems are becoming more important as the core of enterprise information systems. Especially, as one of the most attractive database applications, data warehousing receives much attention. Though secondary storage such as hard disks has become inexpensive, we cannot disregard the cost of secondary storage when we construct such a large-scale database system. In this paper, aiming at reducing the storage cost, we propose a database compression method which utilizes the view mechanism provided by relational database management systems, and we describe the way to process update operations on compressed databases. We also discuss several issues on implementing our proposing method.
