Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) For many years, the authors have been striving to develop a portable ultrasonic time-of-flight (TOF) computed tomography system for archaeological investigation of bulidings with cultural value. By repetition of many laboratory experiments and field work testings, they have endeavoured to realize the apparatus which can meet the requirments for structural inspection of the pillars and beams of the buildings. In this paper, after a brief outlook on the past development of the research, the authors demonstrate its high potential for practical use showing the results of the preliminary experiments in the laboratory and the feild work at the Five-Story Pagoda of Honmonji temple in Ikegami, Ohta ward, Tokyo. Nevertheless, there still remain some technical problems to be overcome, such as the loss of TOF data due to excessive attenuation of ultrasound and unexpected shift of a sound-speed anomaly in the reconstructed cross-sectional image.
