Elastic constants of multi-domain LiTaO_3 crystal

Abstract(in English) Studies on chemical composition changes for LiNbO_3 single crystals and on elastic inhomogeneities for LiTaO_3 wafers, due to residual multi-domains, have been conducted with data of velocity changes of leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAWs) obtained by line-focus-beam acoustic microscopy. However, the LSAW velocity variations observed on 36°YX-LiTaO_3 substrates, due to residual multi-domains, have not been quantitatively explained. It has been, therefore, pointed out that knowledge of the elastic properties of multi-domain crystals, as well as of single-domain crystals, is essentially needed for quantitative analyses of the velocity variations. In this paper, velocities of bulk waves and LSAWs, and density are measured for multi-domain (depoled) LiTaO_3 specimens, and all the independent components of the elastic constants are determined for the first time. The experimental results of LSAW velocities measured as a function of propagation direction for a multi-domain 36°YX-LiTaO_3 wafer are quantitatively understood, being in excellent agreement with the calculated results using the determined clastic constants.
