Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The ammonia assimilation process in E.coli tries to hold the ratio of nitrogen source(glutamine)to carbon source(α-ketoglutarate)against the change in environmental nitrogen(ammonia)concentration. Glutamine synthase plays a central role in regulating the ratio of gluatamine to α-ketoglutarate(N/C ratio), where the activity and expression level of glutamine synthase are regulated by feedback controls, respectively. Each feedback control shows a property of a linear control, suppressing the decrease in the N/C ratio when ammonia concentration decreases. However, the combination of both has the capability to completely prevent the N/C ratio from decreasing with the decrease in ammonia. New system science will be required to elucidate control systems of a biological system.
