Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes about Evolvable Hardware (EHW) chips developed in Electrotechnical Laboratory and some examples of their application areas, mainly concerning the image data compression EHW chip for electrophotographic printer. EHW is a new hardware framework which can reconfigure itself to adapt to the environment and the change of environment. EHW is expected to change the methodology of electronics design, since it can reconfigure its functionality by itself while used in the actual environment, although the ordinary hardware cannot do so. This paper shows that the data compression EHW chip exhibited about twice better compression ratio than the international standard method. Some other EHW chips and their various applications are also introduced in this paper.
