Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In many fields the problem arises of how to obtain information about shape, or how to change the shape of objects in an image. To do this, we need a method for automatic extraction of shape information, and a representation which allows us easily to change the shape. One representation which is very convenient from this point of view uses a common prototype and describes the shape of any given object in terms of its deviation from this prototype. However, such a respresentation requires the establishment of correspondences (ie. a warping fucntion) between the given image and the prototype. In this paper we describe a method for the extraction of warping functions. The proposed method is based on a variational principle, and the warping function is obtained as a solution which minimizes a squared sum of pixelwise differences under smoothness constraints. In the rest of the paper we describe details of the method and its possible applications.
