Discrimination of Document Layout Region Based on Rectangular Layout Models

Abstract(in English) In the case of constructing document filing systems to manage documents as image data,it is necessary to discriminate document layout regions,for instance,various regions of document titles, figures and tables,among others from a standpoint of efficient information retrieval.The so called rule-base system using document arrangement rules is considerably effective for regular documents,but it carries deficiencies like the difficulty of modification of the rules by an ordinary user.In this paper we present how to discriminate document title regions by generating such a rectangular layout model in the form of graphs that represents the relation between the arrangements of a title and the subsequent sentences,and by defining the distance between rectangular layout models.This formulation makes it easy to modify the rules involved in the discrimination and it is expected to bring a useful and general technique for this kind of discrimination.
