Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we present a 3D modified exoskeleton (mES) and experimental results of its application to the discrimination between malignant tumors and benign tumors in chest CT images. The mES is a compact shape descriptor which preserves significant characteristics about an object, that are meaningful for object classification. In the classification process, the similarity measure between two tumors based on their mESs is computed and tumors are classified by a clustering algorithm. The experiment on a set of seventeen volumetric lung tumors resulted in four misclassifications where two malignant tumors are misclassified as benign and two benign tumors are misclassified as malignant. The results from our preliminary work demonstrate the potential usefulness of the mES and the similarity measure as one of the features for classification.
