Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we describe a method for automated extraction of emphysematous lesions of the lung and quantitative evaluation of their distribution patterns using high resolution 3-D chest CT images. Multi detector row CT scanners enabled us to take volumetric CT images in high resolution. Most of studies of computer aided diagnosis for pulmonary emphysema detect and process low attenuation areas by using two-dimensional image processing techniques. It is strongly desired to develop a method that evaluates the state of diseases qtiantitatively by using 3-D image processing. In this report, we extract emphysematous lesions automatically using a region growing method. Distribution of detected low attenuation areas is analyzed. We applied the proposed method to eight cases of 3-D chest CT images. Experimental results showed that the method could evaluate quantitatively the distribution patterns of lesions.
