An Experiment on Image Recognition by Images Gathered from the World Wide Web

Abstract(in English) Thanks to the recent rapid spread of digital cameras, the demand for generic image recognition of various kinds of scenes becomes the greater. It is, however, hard to apply conventional image recognition methods to such generic recognition, because most of their applicable targets are restricted. Then, in this study, we try to carry out generic image recognition by image-feature-based image search, which is used in content-based image retrieval. In case of recognition for generic image, due to its diversity, we have to prepare a large number of learning images, and commercial image collections, for example, Corel Image Gallery, are widely used in conventional studies. However, they are not suitable as learning images for generic image recognition, since they do not include various kinds of images. Then, in stead of commercial image collection, we propose utilizing of images gathered from the World Wide Web by the image-gathering system from WWW we have proposed as learning images.
