Abstract(in English)	This paper describes a lipreading system using an eigenspace method. The eigenspace method does not work well when a lip position varies. To reduce the influence of the lip position variance, we developed a method that first finds the rough position of a mouth using a color extraction method from a face image and then determines the precise position using an eigentemplate technique. Furthermore, we constructed an automatic lipreading system that describes the time variance of a mouth shape using the eigenspace method. An experiment shows that this system recognizes 69% of 100 words.
