Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The binarization is necessary for character recognition from the color image. But if character's colors are more than one color, we must change the threshold in individual areas. In this paper, an algorithm that the color image is divided into areas in which the threshold for binarization is only one is proposed. The concept of "Color Square Wave" is introduced. The Color Square Wave is a group of contiguous picture elements that constitute character or background. The areas for a binarization are determined using a clustering of Color Square Wave. Since both position and color information are used for clustering, this proposed method can be applied to small character areas. By the experiments using color images such as fliers, the validity of the proposed method is shown.
