Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Japanese sign-language dictionaries in general present, for each Japanese word, a description (text) of the sign motion and a pictorial illustration for the word. In this paper, we introduce our computer software system which automatically generates, from these texts and pictorial illustrations, sign-language animations played by a virtual puppet in a 3D virtual space. A natural language processing and a picture analysis are applied to the text and to the pictorial illustration, resectively. Their results are combined by a multi-modal information processing to find the hand motions and finger shapes, which are in turn used to create sign-language animations. In order to achieve high computational efficiency the natural language processing and the pictorial analysis utilize the conditions arising from the fact that they are concerned with the sign-language.
