Comparison of Color Spaces Based on Human Classification of Pixels Using Only Color Features

Abstract(in English) In color image segmentation, we would like to obtain segmentation results which are similar to the results humans would produce. So, we compare color spaces from this point of view. We consider eleven different color spaces : RGB space, five HSV (Hue-Saturation-Value) space, that is, Smith's model, Joblove's model, Tenenbaum's model, New HSV models No.1 and No.2, CIEL^*u^*v^* and L^*a^*b^* uniform color spaces, YES model, YIQ model, and the opponent color axes model. We used the Munsell color chart, which is supposed to have a uniform arrangement of colors from the human perceptual view, and results of human classification of color pixels in real images. We define three criteria : uniformity of distances between adjacent colors, concentration of colors, and degree of separability. As a result L^*a^*b^* model and Joblove model are closest similar to human color perception. RGB space, YES model, YIQ model, and the opponent color axes are considerably different from it.
