Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, expression recognition and understanding have become an active and significant research area. Here, we put forward a method to understand and to recognize mathematical expressions based on a rule base and a brief design for the system. Because understanding of expressions with ambiguity has certain connection with people's sense and experience, we build a rule base including mathematical rules, sense-based ones and experience-based ones. Then we discuss on the construction of mathematical rules, understand and recognize the expressions from layout and semantics aspects by taking advantage of these rules. As experimental results, the layout trees and semantic trees for expressions are generated by applying a 1D string transformed from a 2D expression image.
