Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we propose a new method of character string segmentation from a handwritten document image. This method uses the limitation of the write region(background)for thinning algorithm, thinning for the background and the elimination of the useless chains. The limitation is effective for obtaining the correct string border and shortening the thinning time. The useless chains are eliminated step by step by the different condition at each step. We evaluated the efficiency of this system experimentally for 20 handwritten document images by computer. The correct rate of the character string segmentation was 85.6%.
