Posture Measurement by Camera and Tactile Sensor

Abstract(in English) An automatic posture measurement method is required in the field of rehabilitation and sports. It is difficult to measure posture automatically using only an image sensor. This paper proposes a method that combines a camera and a tactile sensor. The method has two steps. First, the position and posture of the human body is estimated. Body posture is estimated from foot pressure distribution and a motion model, while position is estimated by using the relative position of the camera and tactile sensor. The motion model can account for changes in posture while the subject is moving. The posture measurement is refined in the second step by extracting the skeletal features from the camera images. The search area in this step can be limited to a neighbor-hood of the first step's skeletal position estimate, which is projected on the camera image plane. We experimented with posture measurement in walking motion. The motion model was constructed by averaging 160 walking patterns of 8 women. The proposed method was able to correctly measure another subject's body posture from camera images.
