Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When the sample size is limited, the performance of the quadratic discriminant function peaks and is deteriorated with increasing feature dimensionality. To avoid the problem, the efficiency of the optimum discriminant function derived by Bayesian approach is comparatively studied by computer simulation. The experimental result shows that the optimum discriminant fucntion, and those functions derived from the optimum one such as a pseudo Bayes discriminant function, a modified projection distance, and the projection distance do not yield the peaking phenomenon when the sample size is common to all classes. When the sample size varies from class to class, the optimum discriminant function and the pseudo Bayes discriminant function do not yield the peaking phenomenon, while the others do.
