Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Practical OCR is required to deal with various documents. Many kinds of fonts are commonly used in our life. Especially, the fonts which are used for headlines of newspapers or magazines are decorated to attract the attention of readers. In general, these decorative characters are designed by transforming the structure, adding a decoration, or deleting a part of original characters. In this paper, a new algorithm for extracting structures of decorative characters is proposed. By using multi-scale image, ridges and ravines are detected for extracting the structure. The effectiveness of the new structure extraction algorithm is shown by experiments with decorative character images.
