Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have developed a technology that recognizes telop charactersto index video data for content-based retrieval. In particular, this paper proposes methods of recognizing segmented characters extracted from video data. Telop character images have two problems: degraded character edges and background noise. To overcome these problems, we have improved the methods of image restoration, feature extraction, training data generation, and classification. Experiments show that the proposed methods achieve the recognition rate of 76% and the cumulative classification rate within the best ten of 92%. Both values are significantly better than those of conventional methods.
